Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs

If there’s one iconic food from the Calvin and Hobbes comics, it’s Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. Calvin eats three bowls every Saturday for breakfast, and it’s hinted throughout the comics that it could be linked to his hyperactivity and short attention span. With its astronomical sugar and caffeine content, this is one intense cereal, and Calvin scoops on EXTRA sugar to boot! The C&H comics that feature Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs are some of my favorites, so of course I chose it as the dessert for our menu. 🙂

I started out with a pretty healthy homemade version of Cocoa Puffs from SheKnows.com. I added sugar to the recipe to amp up the sweetness and coated the cereal pieces in powdered sugar before baking to get that frosted look. The final result was a sweet treat which, thanks to the cocoa powder in the original recipe, had a rich fudgy chocolate flavor.

So pour yourself a bowl or three and chow down on Calvin’s favorite cereal!

NOTE: Apologies to all the email subscribers who accidentally got an email last week containing a post from next month’s menu. My computer was being spazzy, and when I hit “Save Draft” it decided to publish instead ?. I took down the post right away, so I don’t think anyone else saw it. At least you guys have an edge when I send out my photo hint about the new menu on social media next month, right? 😉

Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs

Calvin: I think rituals are important. My favorite ritual is eating three bowls of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs and watching TV cartoons all Saturday morning. After a few hours, I’m so overstimulated I can’t sit still or even think straight.
Hobbes: Sort of a transcendental experience, huh?
Calvin: Yeah. I achieve a lower consciousness.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Makes 1 bowl chocolate frosted sugar bombs

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Add everything except the maple syrup to a food processor and pulse until combined. While pulsing, pour in the maple syrup. The mix should form a grainy paste. When you pinch off a small portion, it should hold its shape when rolled into a ball (if it’s too dry to hold its shape, pulse in an extra tablespoon of syrup).
  3. Roll the dough into blueberry-sized balls and lightly toss the balls in powdered sugar, tapping away the excess. Place them 1″ apart on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 10-15 minutes until firm, stirring halfway through. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely on the pan.
  5. Pour yourself a bowl as you settle in for some Saturday morning cartoons!
