Purple Petaled Flowers in Mortar and Pestle

Here in the Midwest, we’re in the middle of sickness season. The flu is steadily making its rounds through most schools and businesses, and here in my family’s usually cozy hobbit hole, we’re battling a nasty cold. The Mister, as usual, has barely a tickle in his throat, but the Little Mister and myself have been suffering through some pretty crummy days and nights. So crummy, in fact, that even though I realized last weekend that I didn’t have a bonus recipe planned for today, I never really came up with a plan. Energy and brain power have not been on my list of strengths this week. Plus, I figured an extra trek through the snow to the grocery store wouldn’t be the healthiest thing ever.

Long story short: No bonus recipe today, BUT I didn’t want to leave you with nothing. The Mister suggested I make a post featuring some of my favorite sick day food. I loved the idea, so here are my top 5! 😀

  1. SOUP SOUP sOuP SOUP SOUUUUUUUUP! My throat is absolutely KILLING me right now, which makes most foods too painful to eat. Soup, on the other hand, soothes the pain AND makes sure I replenish my fluids. Win win!

  2. OATMEAL! Let’s be honest, this is basically breakfast soup, but that’s why it makes me so happy when I’m sick. It’s simple, soothing, and easy on my stomach when I can’t keep much down.

  3. MUFFINS! These are a great make-ahead at the beginning of the colder months, when you can freeze them and thaw them out when you’re under the weather and don’t feel like cooking. There are some spinach muffins in my freezer calling my name right now. Scones work too! ^.^

  4. MILKSHAKES! I made one last night and it was sooooo heavenly. I stayed away from stirring in any chunky ingredients, but a smooth, cold milkshake is just right when I’m feeling overheated and sore. Homemade fruit pops are also a great option.

  5. TEA! Tea is my answer to everything, always. However, there are some very specific teas I keep in stock for when I’m feeling yucky. I’ve been sticking to non-herbal decafs right now (like Twinings decaf English Breakfast) because my brain doesn’t feel equip to figure out which herbs are ok for me to have while pregnant. But most times, herbal teas are my sick-time jam. Here are some of my favorites:
