At first I thought I’d have a hard time coming up with items for a Sabriel reading kit, but when I sat down to brainstorm, I couldn’t stop the flow of ideas! Charter marks! Mogget! Swords! So much more! Though Google searches turned out to be comically tricky…since “Sabriel” is also the name of a character from Supernatural. Uh-oh! 😛
But after some digging, I managed to find a lot of fun stuff! I’m especially proud of the amigurumi Mogget I found on Etsy. Enjoy! ^.^
Time for another reading kit! It’s been a while since I’ve done a children’s book, so I had a good bit of fun throwing this kit together. I’ll admit, it was tempting to make everything peach-themed, but I’m proud to say I branched out and managed to include a lot of other iconic things from the book as well. Enjoy! 🙂
We’re back with another kit, and boy am I excited about this one! As you may have guessed by the fact that I’m doing an entire recipe menu based around the show Firefly, I’m a pretty big fan of the Firefly/Serenity universe. The Mister and I may or may not have the theme song among our repertoire of lullabies for our baby. #BabyBrowncoat ^.^
So when I started putting this kit together, it was hard not to go overboard. I mean, c’mon, ThinkGeek has a WHOLE SECTION OF THEIR SITE devoted to Firefly paraphernalia. Still, I managed to restrain myself and only selected the Internet’s best Firefly goodies.

Howdy, folks! Our new Book of the Month (or rather, book series of the month) is the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I’ll start posting recipes based on the books on Thursday, but today we’re starting the month off with a Little House reading kit!
I always have fun planning reading kits, but I had a particularly good time making this one. I LOVED playing pioneers as a kid, so when I decided to make a Little House kit, it totally sent me back to my childhood. I kept thinking of things I would’ve loved to have while reading the books as a kid!
Of course, that now gives me the unique problem of reeeeeeeally wanting to buy all this stuff for myself. But is that even really a problem? I mean, I can just tell everyone I’m being cultured, and they’ll accept that as a TOTALLY legit answer, right? Please say yes…
Normally I make a reading kit for my menu of the month, but since The Nutcracker is a play without any dialogue, there isn’t much to read. Is it just me, or was Sherlock Holmes DESIGNED to have a reading kit? Putting this thing together was a breeze, you guys. I’ve made easy kits before, but seriously—I chose all the items for this one in under 20 minutes. It practically made itself! Maybe it’s the iconic imagery (pipes! deerstalkers! magnifying glasses!), or maybe it’s just the fact that there are so many Sherlock fans out there making awesome stuff. Either way, I’ve pretty much decided that this is already in my top 5 favorite reading kits. Enjoy! 🙂
Oh, Studio Ghibli. Not only are your stories amazing, but your characters are such a perfect combo of magic and true human spirit that they’ve become synonymous with childhood itself for many of us.
Making a marathon kit for Studio Ghibli movies was simultaneously one of the most difficult and most rewarding kits I’ve ever made. On the one hand, there are SO MANY options for what to include that it was downright intimidating. But all the Ghibli movies are so awesome, how can you possibly go wrong? 🙂
In the end, this kit turned out a little bit longer than some of my others, but I’m satisfied that I managed to include the very best. Enjoy! 🙂
There’s a lot of beauty to be found in the book A Little Princess. So many of the sentences are elegantly crafted with lush descriptions. I found myself reading several of them twice just to enjoy them over again (check out the sunset in Chapter 11—you wont’ be sorry!). But even if the descriptions had been sub-par, it would still be hard not to get swept up in the romanticism of vintage lockets, porcelain dolls, and dainty cakes.
Even so, the real artistry of A Little Princess is in how it showcases the beauty of the human spirit. Sara Crewe is gentle and generous while living in the lap of luxury, but this doesn’t change when she encounters hardship. Instead, she works even harder to live her philosophy that a girl is a princess because of how she acts, not what she has. As a result, she draws out the inner beauty of the people around her—from the baker woman down the stree to the ld man next door.
The reading kit below is designed to revel in the lavish lifestyle described in the book…but in true Sara fashion, remember to share it with a friend! 🙂
