There’s a lot of beauty to be found in the book A Little Princess. So many of the sentences are elegantly crafted with lush descriptions. I found myself reading several of them twice just to enjoy them over again (check out the sunset in Chapter 11—you wont’ be sorry!). But even if the descriptions had been sub-par, it would still be hard not to get swept up in the romanticism of vintage lockets, porcelain dolls, and dainty cakes.
Even so, the real artistry of A Little Princess is in how it showcases the beauty of the human spirit. Sara Crewe is gentle and generous while living in the lap of luxury, but this doesn’t change when she encounters hardship. Instead, she works even harder to live her philosophy that a girl is a princess because of how she acts, not what she has. As a result, she draws out the inner beauty of the people around her—from the baker woman down the stree to the ld man next door.
The reading kit below is designed to revel in the lavish lifestyle described in the book…but in true Sara fashion, remember to share it with a friend! 🙂
In The Odyssey, Odysseus must choose between facing the man-eating monster Scylla or the ship-destroying whirlpool Charybdis. A tough choice no matter how you slice it, but these Greek pinwheel sandwiches are an easy choice: truly delicious and easy to make! A recipe that I originally found on Hello Healthy, they’ve got all the flavors you’d expect in a classic Greek salad (feta, cucumbers, peppers), plus some surprises (like herbed cream cheese). I love the way the feta incorporates into the cream cheese, and the roasted peppers add just the right touch of crunch.
As you can see, we’ve got a new look around here! You may recall my special post a few days ago, where I explained that some unexpected problems with my previous blog theme had me hunting for a new one. This gorgeous new theme (courtesy of Nose Graze) caught my eye right away, since it’s so customizable. Unfortunately, it took me almost three whole days to get it set up, but I promise I have a good reason:
This awesome little guy is my brand new nephew (and soon to be godson!). I’ve been staying at my sister’s place the last couple days to help out with the new baby, which hasn’t left much time for blogging…but it HAS left lots of time for baby cuddles and playing pretend with my 3-year-old niece. The toddler and I even colored some leftover sugar cookies (from my Candied Flower Cookie recipe) with some special food markers I had on hand.
I had so much fun making Rum-Soaked Ribs and Key Lime Coins for our Treasure Island menu! Alas, August is drawing to a close, so it’s time to end this Book of the Month. If you like, you can give Treasure Island a farewell toast with our exclusive Long John Island Tea at Adagio.com!
Everyone knows there’s nothing a pirate loves more than gold, so I knew these Key Lime Coins from BHG were the perfect dessert for our Treasure Island menu—crisp and light with just a hint of lime and sweet powdered sugar. They’re just the thing to cheer you up when you and your pirate buddies have lost your treasure to that meddling cabin boy!
If I was marooned on a deserted island for three years, I’d crave cheese too! Ben Gunn flat-out waxes lyrical about it when telling Jim what he misses most about home. If I could dive into the book (a superpower for which I’ve often wished), I’d bake Ben a batch of these heart-meltingly homey cheese buns, developed by Laura at PheNOMenal!
In Treasure Island, the ship’s crew doesn’t call Long John Silver “Barbecue” for nothing. As the ship’s cook, he’s a wizard in the galley, transforming rations of dried pork and salted beef into delicious fare. This sweet ‘n spicy rack of Caribbean ribs is just the sort of entree Long John would make for the crew of the Hispaniola…and what’s dinner without a little rum? 😉
August is here, and with it, our new Book of the Month: Treasure Island! A story about ships on the high sea and tropical locales seemed like the perfect way to end the summer.
