Is there a woman in your life you’d like to honor who happens to love books and tea? Consider Mother’s Day sorted. 😀

My cookbook, A LITERARY TEA PARTY, includes a section with themed menu ideas for anyone who needs a little party planning inspiration. It also includes a section at the back with recipes for custom blending your own teas (all book-themed, of course). Since Mother’s Day is just around the corner, I think now is a perfect time for me to share a few of those themed menus. You can use these ideas to host a tea party of your own or make a yummy treat to give as a gift!

Keep in mind, these parties don’t have to be limited to biological mothers. They’re perfect for all the important women in your life. We like to include our kids’ godmothers in Mother’s Day festivities, but you could also do this for a close friend, favorite aunt, mentor, or more!

Hello, 2021! If you guys caught my post yesterday, you’ve heard all about my blog plans for this year, so I won’t dive into the details here. The short, quick version is that I’m back to making 4-course menus for every book I cook here on the blog, albeit on a relaxed schedule. I’ll be spending 2 months on each book instead of 1 and posting a new recipe every other week. Read More

Mrs. Markham’s Steak and Ale Pies with Mushroom and Caramelized Onion

Say hello to Anne Bronte’s newest fan: me! * waves excitedly * Admittedly, I’m a bit late to the party (about 172 years too late). I have a habit of putting off hefty books if my library doesn’t have the audiobook, since my kids try to climb on me whenever I sit down. Still, I managed to eke out little parcels of time over the past month to read an ebook of Anne Bronte’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and I’m SO glad I did! I like it even better than Wuthering Heights, my first foray into the Bronte books. The main characters are much more likeable, and I love the role books play in the story. For example:

Want to declare your undying fidelity and affection for someone? Give them a book!

Want to express your disdain for your husband’s paramour? Lend her a book and write a note on the flyleaf declaring her unworthy of consideration or respect!

Want to let your friends know your soul is filled with disquiet and anguish? Continually pick up and discard a book (alternatively, stare at the same page for several minutes while absorbing nothing).

Seriously, can we make the Victorian attitude towards books a thing again? Because I’m all for it.

Last-Minute St. Patrick’s Day Activities for Kids…and Parents Who Didn’t Know They’d Be Homeschooling This Year!

Posted March 17, 2020 by Alison's Wonderland Recipes in Holidays / 1 Comment

With all the school closures due to the virus outbreak, many families have found themselves temporarily homeschooling. Lots of people I’ve talked to are enjoying the extra time with the kids but struggling to come up with educational activities on such short notice. I found myself in a similar position, albeit for different reasons. We started light homeschooling with the Little Mister earlier this year, but I got a nasty case of food poisoning on Sunday and didn’t have anything ready to go for this week, most notably St. Patrick’s Day.

Last night, I scrambled to throw something together last-minute. I did a few quick internet searches for crafts and ran through the house collecting all the Irish stuff we had…then I sat down and banged out this post really quickly, hoping it might help parents who are temporarily homeschooling due to current events. Or just want something fun and Irish-y to do with their kids today! 🙂

One of the things I love about a holiday-themed school day is that it turns education into a celebration. These last-minute St. Patrick’s Day activities for kids are great if you find yourself unexpectedly homeschooling due to school closures or just want to break up the monotony that can come with current social distancing requirements. If you’ve got a library card, a music app on your phone, some snacks in your cabinets, and construction paper, you can throw together a day’s worth of themed activities, no problem!

BOOKS

Black Book on Brown Floor

We’re reading Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato and Fin M’Coul: The Giant of Knockmany Hill. If your child is older, you can even read some of The Confession of St. Patrick, which is translated from Patrick’s original writings, or selections from a book of Irish folktales. These and other Irish-themed stories are available in ebook or audiobook format in most online library systems, where you can check them out instantly and access them on your browser.

CRAFTS

Pencils in Stainless Steel Bucket

We’ll be creating a simplified version of a leprechaun mask craft from Glamamom.com using construction paper, tape, orange paint, and a paper plate. It works especially well when paired with the Jamie O’Rourke book, since kids can have fun waiting for the leprechaun to appear in the story and putting the mask on whenever he speaks. If your child knows how to read, you can have them play the part of the leprechaun as you read together.

FOOD

White and Green Ceramic Floral Mug

You’ve probably figured out that I’m usually all about themed recipes. However, given my recent bout of food poisoning, I’m currently all about not upsetting my stomach, so I didn’t do much in this arena. I literally just raided my cabinets for anything green or orange to present to my children as Special St. Patrick’s Day Snacks™. Green and orange packaging also counted. In the end we wound up with goldfish crackers, dry roasted edamame beans, an apple pie Larabar, and a pumpkin puree pouch (for the baby). A peek in the freezer revealed a bag of spinach muffins I’d forgotten about, so I’m hoping my kids will eat them if I convince them it’s festive.

Another nice way to utilize library ebooks is by checking out Irish-themed cookbooks and discussing the sorts of food you see. If during your quarantine prep shopping you happened to buy the ingredients for something your kid wants to make, go ahead and fire up the stove!

MEDIA

Silver Ipad on Silver Macbook Pro

We have Song of the Sea, The Secret of Roan Inish, and Darby O’Gill and the Little People on DVD. All but Roan Inish are available to rent on Amazon, and you may be able to find them through your preferred video streaming service. If not, there are lots of other Irish movies for kids available. The Secret of Kells is a favorite of mine, though the brief scenes with the invaders could be a bit scary for very young children (same goes for the banshee scene in Darby O’Gill). If you’d rather avoid movies, try an Irish folk music station on Pandora or other music streaming service and dance along!

RELIGION & CULTURE

gray concrete cross statue

If you are Catholic (our family is), this is obviously a great day to talk about the person of St. Patrick. I like to include other Irish saints too, like St. Brigid or Our Lady of Knock, if we don’t get a chance to observe their individual feast days. We will be praying this shortened version of the St. Patrick’s Breastplate Prayer and listening to the Shining Light podcast episode about him. If you don’t plan on highlighting the religious significance of the day, it can still be a good time to talk about Irish history and culture in general, especially if your family has Irish heritage.

I hope you found some ideas here to help bring your temporary homeschool to life
with minimal stress and lots of fun. Erin go bragh!

Gulliver’s Travels: A Lilliputian Feast

Posted April 4, 2019 by Alison's Wonderland Recipes in Book Events and Tours / 0 Comments

Hi, guys! I’m finally back from my hiatus! I loved having a few months off to take care of the new baby, but I’m definitely ready to get cooking again. Full steam ahead! ^.^

Some of you may remember that I’m trying out a new format this year. I love doing full menus of recipes, but I don’t think I’ll be able to invest that much time in the blog this year. This is because, in addition to the new baby, I’ve got a Super Secret Writing Project in the works! 🙂 I can’t give more details quite yet, so all I can say is that it’s gonna take up quite a bit of free time. Rather than shut down the blog for a year, I decided to reduce my schedule to 1 post per month and take reader requests for recipes (you can send me your request here). Today is our first installment!

Today’s recipe is inspired by Gulliver’s Travels…although, if I’m being honest, it’s more like 3 recipes. I guess after being away so long, I was a little overeager to get back in the kitchen. 😉 But I promise there’s a practical reason for tripling up on recipes today: this post is a tribute to the Lilliputians, the tiny civilization Gulliver meets during the early part of his journey. He’s a giant in their world, so a few bite-size dainties to him are a whole feast to them!

This 3-course feast starts with Caprese salad bites made from hollowed out cherry tomatoes, bits of fresh mozzarella, snips of fresh basil, and a touch of honey vinaigrette dressing (the dressing recipe is a variation of one from Iowa Girl Eats). Next comes a mini beef wellington recipe I found on the Food Network. Finally, we have 3-tier mini cakes with vanilla pound cake, chocolate buttercream, and fresh berries.

Whether you’re a minute Lilliputian or a giant from a far off land, you’re sure to find these dishes satisfying.

Howdy, folks! I’m utterly delighted to introduce our household’s newest member: the Little Miss! We welcomed her to the world at 7:58 am on 1/3/19. She measured 21 inches and 7 lbs 11 oz, and we’re already smitten with her. Those of you who follow me on social media have probably seen me post about her a lot over the past month, but now I’m finally ready to sit down and share her birth story here on the blog!

Christmas News & Life Updates: Goodreads Awards and Jan. 2019 Blog Schedule

Posted December 22, 2018 by Alison's Wonderland Recipes in Blogging, Book Events and Tours, Holidays / 0 Comments

Christmas Tree With Baubles

Merry Almost Christmas, everybody! Today I’m putting the finishing touches on gifts and getting ready to hunker down for the last remaining weeks before we bring the Little Miss into the world. In the meantime, I’ve got some exciting life updates to share with you guys:
.

THE GOODREADS CHOICE AWARDS

As many of you may remember, my cookbook A Literary Tea Party was nominated in the 2018 Goodreads Choice Awards. The winners were announced at the beginning of the month, and I’m thrilled to say I placed 4th in my category! 😀 There was some tough competition—including cookbooks from Ina Garten, Bobby Flay, and Giada De Laurentiis—so getting 4th place was really exciting for me. I flailed about it on social media quite a bit, but this is the first chance I’ve had to announce it on the blog. Thank you SO much to everyone who voted! 🙂

Pssst! If you’re looking for a last minute Christmas gift, you can still get my book before Christmas if you order through Amazon!
.

NEXT YEAR’S BLOG SCHEDULE

In my pregnancy announcement post, I mentioned plans to approach next year in 3 phases: hiatus, 2 posts per month, then back to full schedule by the end of the year. I recently had a big blog-related project come up that I need to start working on ASAP, so the plan has changed some. I can’t give full details about the project yet since it’s not officially official, but I should be able to shower you all with the awesome news by early spring. 🙂

As for 2019 blog plans, I’ll still be on postpartum hiatus for January-March. I scheduled some past posts to republish on Thursdays so it won’t be a total dead zone around here, but I don’t know how often I’ll reply to comments and such. After March, my plan is to do 1 post per month for the rest of the year. With 2 kids under 3 years at home, I’m gonna need the extra time for Operation Super Secret Project! 😉

There’s a silver lining, though: you guys get to pick what I make for the monthly posts! If there’s a food you’ve always wanted to see featured on the blog, shoot me an email through the Chat with the Chef page! It can be a specific literary recipe (like, say, the Queen’s tarts from Alice in Wonderland), or if you want to see a certain book featured but don’t care which food I pick, you can tell me about that too.

And you can start sending your requests now! I want to build up as many ideas as possible before March so I have the option to work ahead (and time to read the book, if it’s one I haven’t read). So if you’ve already got something in mind, send it my way! 😀

.

That’s all from me for now!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everybody!

I’ve hinted a few times over the past several months about some big news I wanted to share. It’s been hard to keep it a secret, since it’s been a major contributing factor to my difficulty with keeping up on blog stuff, but I wanted to wait until the time was right to spill the beans. That time has finally come, so here’s my big announcement:

Howdy, folks! Sorry about the mix-up earlier today. Those of you who were paying close attention probably already know what I’m talking about. I’ve been trying to work ahead on my posts and accidentally scheduled next Tuesday’s post for today! EEP! >.< It was only up for 10 minutes before I caught the mistake, but those of you who follow through email probably still got an update about it….so I guess you got a sneak peak at next month’s menu! I can trust you to keep it a secret until June for everyone else, right? 😉

Anyway, THIS is the post that was supposed to go up today: my Top Ten Tuesday linkup! Below I’ve shared a list of my top 10 favorite fictional worlds. Hopefully they’re all worlds that are forgiving of bloggers who try to work too far ahead and get their wires crossed! 😉
