Taters! Can’t have a TALES OF THE SHIRE menu without them. Not only are they Sam Gamgee’s favorite food, but they’re the first item you grow in your garden in-game. This recipe is an ode not just to taters, but all root vegetables. It’s packed with carrots, parsnips, turnips, and onions too! Don’t worry, if you don’t like turnips, you can double up on another veg or add rutabaga (my personal favorite soup veg).

According to the recipe’s description on the TALES OF THE SHIRE wiki, “only the most seasoned gardener could create a soup with such simple ingredients,” so I kept mine simple too. Just some chopped root vegetables in a simple simmered broth flavored with garlic, ginger, and bay. And a Parmesan cheese rind if you have one on hand! That’s my secret ingredient for adding richness and depth to any broth. 😉

— Tales of the Shire

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 cups vegetable stock
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 3-inch thumb of ginger
  • 1 1″x4″ Parmesan cheese rind, optional
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into coins
  • 1 large parsnip, peeled and cut into coins
  • 2 red potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/2 turnip, diced
    • If you don’t like turnips, no worries. You can double up on another veg or add something new!
  • 1/2 large onion, diced
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp snipped green onion

Makes approx. 8 cups Gaffer Gamgee’s Root Soup

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. In a large pot, combine the vegetable stock, garlic, ginger, cheese rind, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove and discard the ginger, cheese rind, and bay leaf.
  2. Add carrots, parsnips, potato, turnip, and onion to the pot. Bring it back to a simmer and allow to cook for 10-15 minutes or until vegetables are cooked through. Add butter and stir until melted. Add more salt to taste if needed. Garnish with green onion.
  3. Serve during supper in your hobbit hole!
