Today we’re wrapping up our Star Trek menu with a true trekky classic: Romulan Ale. Easily identified by its distinctive bright blue color, Romulan Ale is said to be highly intoxicating, which is part of why the Federation dubs it illegal through most of the series. This particular recipe was a collaborative effort between myself, the Mister, and our good friend David, who’s a bit of a brewing/distilling enthusiast. We toned it down a little bit from the ale described in the show, so you won’t suffer the same awful hangover as you would after drinking the original. 😉
I knew I wanted to use a blue curacao base to get that iconic blue color, and David gave me suggestions for beers that would pair well with it without diluting the color too much. The Mister was my primary taste tester, and after a couple rounds of testing we had the proportions down just right. The resulting beverage tastes a bit like orange cream soda, with just a little beer flavor thrown in. Three cheers for teamwork! 🙂

“Geordi La Forge: You ever think about getting married again?
Guinan: No. Twenty-three was my limit.
[Worf groans with his head down on the table]
Guinan: Worf, are you alright?
Worf: [feeling groggy] Romulan ale should be illegal.
Geordi La Forge: It is.”

INGREDIENTS:
- 3 oz blue curacao, chilled
- 1 1/2 oz Blue Moon, chilled (Shock Top Belgian White works well too, but I like the creaminess that comes from the Blue Moon)
Makes 1 tall glass of Romulan Ale

Haha that quote from Worf. XD I haven’t had a blue liquor before. This sounds interesting.

I’ll admit I wasn’t so sure about the concept of a beer cocktail, but I think it works since the orange flavors in the two alcohols create a common thread between them.
I love Worf’s reaction to it too! 😉
And for a kid-friendly (or for those like me who seldomly drink anything stronger than the occasional beer or glass of wine) Romulan ale you can swap out the liquor with blue Powerade (either regular or zero sugar) and the beer with cream soda (again regular or diet depending on preference) which has a similar color to most beers.

I’d love the high octane version. This one seems too sweet with the blue curaco and really not much to balance it out.
