Split Pea and Ham Soup

When I started reading the Nancy Drew series in preparation for this menu, I crossed my fingers and prayed one of the books would have split pea and ham soup in it. A little weird, right? Stick with me. 😉

For ages, I’ve been looking for an excuse to share one particular split pea and ham soup recipe with you guys, and I knew the Nancy books were my best chance (they were first published in the 1930s, when pea soup was especially popular). As it turns out, luck was on my side–Nancy eats split pea and ham soup in mystery #5, THE HIDDEN STAIRCASE!

So here it is, my go-to pea soup! This little beauty is called Wisconsin Split Pea Soup. It comes from Taste of Home, and it’s one of my favorite cold weather recipes (possibly even my favorite soup ever). I tweaked it just a bit to suit my preferences, but it was practically perfect already. It’s meaty, savory, salty, and oh so comforting. Plus, it’s SO easy.

Grab your favorite mystery novel and cozy up with this steamy bowl of goodness. You’ll thank me. 🙂

DELICIOUS DEATH: Super Fudgy Chocolate Cake, Dark Chocolate Frosting, and Easy Halloween Toppers!

Oh, Delicious Death. When making an Agatha Christie menu, is there any dessert more suitable? This decadent dessert plays a significant role in one of Christie’s most popular novels,
A Murder is Announced. The exact recipe isn’t shared in the book, but we know it’s chocolate cake “of a melting richness,” which, let’s be honest, is enough to make most of us drool already. I made mine from this delightfully rich, almost brownie-like cake recipe, topped with dark chocolate frosting and bats silhouettes made of powdered sugar. If death by chocolate is truly possible, this is how I want to go. 🙂

P.S. We’re taking a vote to see which detective is better, Poirot or Marple. Vote here!

Candied Nuts with Meadowcream

Most Redwall recipes are simple, hearty affairs, and dessert is no exception. In fact, sugar barely even makes an appearance in this recipe. Instead, apple pie spice walnuts are the star of this dish, lightly sweetened and accompanied by a generous helping of Redwall’s famous meadowcream. This dessert’s cozy flavors and simplistic feel make it the perfect way to end our Redwall menu. Enjoy!

Deeper ‘n Ever Turnip ‘n Tater ‘n Beetroot Pie

Today, we continue our menu with a Redwall Abbey staple. Mossflower Wood has loads of great entrees to choose from, but this wouldn’t be a Redwall menu without the abbey’s famous Deeper ‘n Ever Turnip ‘n Tater ‘n Beetroot Pie! The ultimate in root veg goodness, this savory pie boasts buttery herb crust and hearty diced vegetable filling, with a flavor reminiscent of Thanksgiving stuffing. And like all recipes eaten by the mice and moles of Redwall, it’s naturally vegetarian…but I won’t fault you if you add some diced chicken to the mix! 😉

Hotroot Soup

Happy September, folks! The heatwaves are behind us. My favorite season is finally here! There’s something about the combination of crisp air, orange leaves, and harvest activities that give fall a special place in my heart. And when it comes to books, nothing captures the essence of autumn like the Redwall series. Cozy, hearty, homemade dishes are the norm there, so I knew a Redwall menu would be the perfect way to kick off fall.
