Top 10 Books I’ve Recently Added to My TBR

This past weekend before a tutoring session at the library, I completed a mission I’ve been looking forward to for weeks: getting out my giant 2016 To Be Read list and hunting down as many books as possible. And I was pretty proud of my efforts! Unfortunately, I’m a combo of slow reader and type-of-reader-who-can-only-read-one-book-at-a-time, so I had to pace myself and only get three. I just keep reminding myself I have all year to read them all, especially since my library has all the ones I want to read most…

TOP 10 BOOKS I RECENTLY ADDED TO MY TBR:

  1. The Girls at the Kingfisher Club. I first heard about this at Words for Worms. I love fairy tale retellings, even though I think some of them are retold a little too often (Cinderella comes to mind). The Girls at the Kingfisher Club grabbed my interest for two reasons: it’s a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, one of my favorites fairy tales and a rare one to be retold, and it’s set in the 1920’s, an equally rare setting for a retelling.2157243
  2. Skulduggery Pleasant #2: Playing with Fire. I read Skulduggery Pleasant #1 last year at the recommendation of another reader. I couldn’t get enough of the snarky dialogue, and if I’m ever resurrected as a reanimated skeleton, I wanna be one just like Skulduggery. I’m curious to see where the rest of the series goes!826706
  3. Joan of Arc. I’ve owned this book for two years but haven’t gotten around to reading it, mostly because there’s so much to wrap my head around. I love Mark Twain for his humor, but the tone of this book is serious. It’s technically historical fiction, but it’s closely based on events from Joan’s life (Twain researched for years before he began writing it). And although it’s one of his least known works, Twain himself said it was his best. I’m excited but unsure what to expect all at once!11735983
  4. Insurgent/Allegiant/Four. I know, I’m a bad person. I had every intention of finishing the Divergent series after loving the first book. Since 2015 was my year for finishing the Hunger Games books, maybe 2016 can be my year for the Divergent series.6913918
  5. Arabian Nights. I got it STARTED. That counts for something, doesn’t it? I keep chipping away at it a little at a time, but it’s so long, sometimes I wonder if I’ll EVER finish it. I gotta admit, though, it’s good! 🙂26574262
  6. Enchanted Forest: An Inky Quest and Coloring Book. I wasn’t sure if I should include this in my list, since it doesn’t involve much actual reading. Maybe I should start a To Be Colored list? Either way, I’m snatching it up first chance I get!22886868
  7. The Shepherd’s Crown. *sigh* Terry Pratchett’s last Discworld book. Am I ready for this? I keep putting it off because I’m afraid I won’t love it. I keep hearing that it’s the kind of book you have to give a little leeway, since it wasn’t quite finished when Pratchett died. Maybe I’ll hold off until I’m prepared to give Discworld my last solute? I haven’t quite decided yet.77390
  8. Anne of Avonlea. I’m a terrible, terrible person who loved Anne of Green Gables and hasn’t got around to reading the sequel in TWO YEARS. Off with my head! I deserve no better.30659
  9. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius or An Essay Concerning Human Understanding by John Locke…basically anything intellectual. What can I say? 2015 was a year for fiction. I used to read a lot more philosophical stuff, so this year I’m determined to get back in the habit. I may even take a crack at the Summa Theologica (I read bits of it in college, and I’ve always wanted to complete all five volumes).23301545
  10. The Sleeper and the Spindle. The second fairy tale retelling on my list…but the only graphic novel (I should probably remedy that. Got any graphic novel recommendations?). Don’t worry, Neil Gaiman. I WILL READ THIS. SCOUT’S HONOR.

Have you read any of the books on this list?
What did you think of them?
What’s on YOUR 2016 TBR? 🙂

Eeeep I have the Enchanted Forest book and IT IS GORGEOUS. I wish I had time to actually use it though. XD But it’s really really pretty and makes me feel arty even though I mildly fail at art. HEH. *ahem* And I really need to finish the Skulduggery Pleasant series. TRUST ME: they get better with each book….although by “better” I mean “you’re gonna be in so much pain”. XDXD

    • I can’t wait to start coloring! Unfortunately, my desk broke while we were moving a few months ago, so all my art supplies are still in boxes. But as soon as I can dig out my pastel chalk, I’m going to town on that book!
