The Witch’s Hot Chocolate

Yay for bonus recipes! Since January has an extra week in it, we’re finishing up our Narnia menu with a fifth recipe: the White Witch’s hot chocolate, a companion drink to the Turkish delight she presents to Edmund in her sledge. Technically, we don’t know what the Witch gave Edmund to drink, only that it was “very sweet and foamy and creamy, and warmed him right down to his toes.”  This homemade hot chocolate recipe developed by Martina at Eat Your Kimchi fits that description to a T.

The Witch’s Hot Chocolate

“The Queen took from somewhere among her wrappings a very small bottle which looked as if it were made of copper. Then, holding out her arm, she let one drop fall from it on the snow beside the sledge. Edmund saw the drop for a second in mid-air, shining like a diamond. But the moment it touched the snow there was a hissing sound and there stood a jewelled cup full of something that steamed. The dwarf immediately took this and handed it to Edmund with a bow and a smile; not a very nice smile. Edmund felt much better as he began to sip the hot drink. It was something he had never tasted before, very sweet and foamy and creamy, and it warmed him right down to his toes.”
— The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup warm water
  • 4 cups milk
  • 4 shots Baileys (I used caramel Baileys, but you can use whatever flavor you want)
  • any garnish you might like: whipped creamed, marshmallows, chocolate chips, shaved chocolate, cocoa powder, etc. (I highly recommend fresh whipped cream–it makes a great foam and brightens the flavors)

Makes about 4 mugs of hot chocolate

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine all your ingredients except the milk, Baileys, and garnish together in a pot. Whisk until smooth (get in there with a spatula if needed—you want to make sure all the ingredients are fully incorporated).
  2. Set the burner to medium high heat and whisk continuously for 1 minute.
  3. Whisk in the milk and Baileys. Turn the burner up to high and heat the hot chocolate for about 7 minutes or until steaming, whisking every once in a while. Watch it carefully if it starts to simmer and turn down the heat if it looks like it might boil.
  4. To store, chill in a sealed tupperware container for up to 24 hours. To reheat, whisk gently in the storage container until the chocolate that has settled to the bottom redistributes evenly throughout the liquid. Transfer to a pot on the stove and heat on high for 7 minutes or until steaming.
  5. Enjoy in a sledge during a Narnian winter!
This was so delicious! Turns out, you can’t taste the cayenne pepper. Instead, it enhances the taste of the chocolate, so you wind up with more of a dark chocolate flavor. You can definitely taste the alcohol, so I’d recommend halving the Baileys if you want a milder drink. Just keep in mind that the Baileys contributes to the sweetness as well, so you might need to add more sugar to make up the difference.

That’s it for our Narnia menu! Curious as to what our next Book of the Month will be? Tune in on Sunday for hint!

  1. I hope the White Witch didn’t give Edmund an alcoholic hot chocolate…but he did feel much better after drinking it…right down to his toes. So she very well might have given him this hot chocolate concoction to drink! As a child I was allergic to chocolate and drank “hot vanilla” instead. Because of all of the snow in Narnia and because she is the WHITE Witch, I always pictured Edmund drinking a foaming hot vanilla. 🙂

    • When I chose this recipe, I considered leaving out the Baileys, since the drink in the book was intended to be given to a child. Then again, I figured the White Witch probably wouldn’t know that you shouldn’t give alcohol to children, since there weren’t any children in Narnia (and considering her character, she might not have cared, even if she did know). I figured she’d give Edmund whatever she herself drank to keep warm…though you’re right, there’s a good chance it would have been white! 🙂
