End of May Bonus Recipe: The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

I’m a complete novice when it comes to mixing drinks, but the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is SO cool, I knew I couldn’t finish my Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy menu without it. It’s said to contain Santraginean sea water, Arcturan Mega-gin, Qualactin Hypermint extract, and a host of other wild ingredients. Of course, most of these ingredients aren’t exactly “easily sourceable,” so there are many interpretations of this iconic Hitchhiker beverage, ranging from the very simple to the ultra-accurate. I chose this gin-based rendition developed by Mitch Hutts of Critical Hit Cocktails, because I think it has the best of both worlds. It’s complex and unique enough to be considered its own drink, but it’s not married to authenticity at the expense of flavor. It’s easy to make—even for a newbie like me—and I really love the flavor. It’s refreshing and easy to drink, but not too sweet. And check out that awesome neon color! The “gear lemon” garnish is my own personal touch (I learned the technique here).

INTERSTELLAR SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: For all you Zaphods out there, be sure to gargle responsibly and have someone else fly the spaceship when you’ve had one too many. Cheers! 🙂

The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy also mentions alcohol. It says that the best drink in existence is the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. It says that the effect of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick. The Guide also tells you on which planets the best Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters are mixed, how much you can expect to pay for one, and what voluntary organizations exist to help you rehabilitate afterwards.”
— The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 oz bourbon
  • 1.5 oz London dry gin
  • 2 oz sour apple pucker
  • 1 oz blue curacao
  • 2 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup (this can be omitted to achieve a stronger tasting drink)
  • 1 strip of lemon rind
  • Makes 1 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with 1/3 ice.
  2. Pour the first six ingredients into the shaker. Screw on the lid and shake for approximately 15 seconds.
  3. Strain the liquid contents of the shaker into a cocktail glass.
  4. Twist the lemon rind over the glass to release some citrus oils into the drink. You can also drop this into the drink for extra lemon flavor.
  5. For the “gear lemon” garnish, use a narrow peeler to peel long equidistant strips across the length of a lemon. Cut the lemon into slices, and perch a slice on the edge of your glass.
  6. Congratulations! You are now ready for the cosmic taste experience known as the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. In the words of Douglas Adams, “Drink…but very carefully!”

  1. I was SO excited when I found the recipe. In fact, I did my Hitchhiker menu in May specifically so I’d have an extra week to do the Gargle Blaster!

Thank you so much for the nomination! I’ve seen similar awards before and always secretly reeeeeally wanted one. Of course, any kind of award is great, but I think awards that come from fellow bloggers mean a little more than those that come from an anonymous panel of judges. I’m flattered! 🙂
