I owe my love of books to my mother. I remember countless nights of getting to sit in the big bed while she read The Chronicles of Narnia out loud to us. She was the sort of read-alouder who always did the voices, and nothing brings a story to life like the squeaky voice of a mouse or the deep, booming voice of a giant…though she says the mole dialect from the Redwall books was particularly tough to master!

Now that I’m older, I realize that she read me a lot of stories that were, in a way, about me. “Tatterhood and the Hobgoblins” was one of my favorites. It’s the story of a princess who is wild and strange. She runs around the court wearing a tattered cloak, carrying a wooden spoon, and riding a wild goat. In the end, it is revealed that she has the power to appear however she wishes, and becomes beautiful in her own unique way…but only when she is ready.

Thanks, Mom, for always embracing the things that make me different and teaching me that even “wild weeds” are beautiful. πŸ™‚

  1. Alison, thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to comment. I just discovered your blog, and this is such a lovely post! I owe my love of books to my parents. I never read the Harry Potter series when I was younger, and I’m just now reading through them (at the age of 35), and I love them. πŸ™‚

    • Hi, Heather! I’m glad you liked the post! Isn’t it great that parents can introduce kids to books at such a young age? I already have a few of my favorite picture books on my bookshelf, waiting for when I have kids. πŸ™‚
